Introduction
The exclusive-vs-shared question keeps coming up because both sides of the argument sound plausible at a superficial level. Shared leads are cheaper per unit; exclusive leads convert better. Which one wins depends on which numbers you put more weight on.
Why Exclusive Leads Convert Better Than Shared
The empirical answer, drawn from broker data across multiple UK commercial verticals, is that exclusive leads win on cost-per-closed-contract in the overwhelming majority of realistic scenarios. That is the metric that matters to the P&L.
The behavioural reason is prospect fatigue. A prospect called by five brokers in twenty minutes becomes a defensive, low-trust interaction target for every one of them. A prospect called by a single broker at speed can have a normal, consultative business conversation. The trust dynamic is fundamentally different.
The operational reason is sales-floor discipline. Working exclusive leads allows a broker to invest 15 minutes on the first call, follow up over days and weeks, and build a real relationship. Working shared leads forces a scramble that damages the caller's ability to actually sell.
What actually works in practice
The mathematical reason is that conversion rate scales more than linearly with exclusivity. Halving the sharing (from four brokers to two) more than doubles the conversion rate, because prospect fatigue is non-linear.
There are edge cases where shared leads make sense — high-volume sales floors with excess dialer capacity that can economically work a shared feed alongside an exclusive core. But those are the exception, not the rule.
